Elizabeth Reis is a Distinguished Lecturer at Macaulay Honors College, City University of New York, specializing in Medical Ethics, Gender Studies, and the History of Medicine. Previously, she served as Professor and Department Head of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of Oregon. She holds a PhD in History from UC Berkeley and a degree from Smith College.
Her research focuses on the intersection of medicine, ethics, and gender, particularly intersex issues, Puritan religious history, and reproductive technologies. Major works include Bodies in Doubt: An American History of Intersex (2009, 2021) and Spellbound: Women and Witchcraft in America (1998). She contributes to Nursing Clio, a collaborative blog on gender and medicine, and serves on the Ethics Committee at New York Presbyterian Weill Cornell Hospital.
Her articles address bioethical dilemmas in intersex surgeries, circumcision practices, and transgender healthcare. She advocates for patient autonomy and critiques nonconsensual medical interventions. Recent commentaries include discussions on pronoun privilege and ethical care during the pandemic.
