Shannon Walsh is an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre & Film at the University of British Columbia (UBC), affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. She also holds positions as a Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg and a Faculty Associate in UBC’s Department of Anthropology. Her work bridges documentary filmmaking, social justice, and African studies, with a focus on inequality, participatory methods, and visual storytelling. Walsh’s award-winning films, such as Adrianne & the Castle (2024) and The Gig is Up (2021), have screened globally at festivals like SXSW and IDFA. Her research explores themes including labor rights, climate change, and social movements, with over 40 journal articles and multiple authored/co-edited books. She has received prestigious awards, including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2020) and the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2023). Walsh leads the SSHRC-funded ‘TRANSFORM’ project, engaging youth in social change initiatives. Her teaching emphasizes ethical filmmaking and documentary production at UBC.
Research Interests: Documentary film production, participatory video, social justice, South African social movements, visual anthropology, and climate change advocacy.
