Shannon Lennon is a Professor in the Department of Kinesiology & Applied Physiology at the University of Delaware's College of Health Sciences. Her research focuses on cardiovascular physiology, aging, oxidative stress, and the impact of nutritional interventions and exercise on cardiovascular health. She leads the Cardiovascular Nutrition Research Laboratory, investigating dietary nutrients' effects on cardiovascular health and gut microbiome interactions.
Dr. Lennon holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Florida (2003), an MS in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut (1997), and a BS in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut (1993). She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Cardiology at the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute, Boston University Medical School (2003-2005). She is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist in Delaware since 1995.
Her research interests include dietary sodium and potassium's role in blood pressure regulation, vascular function, and oxidative stress. She has published extensively on topics like the effects of high-sodium diets, antioxidant interventions, and dietary patterns on cardiovascular outcomes. Her work emphasizes translating nutritional science into clinical practice to improve cardiometabolic health.
Dr. Lennon has received awards such as the 2014 Outstanding Dietitian of the Year (Delaware Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics) and the 2003 Young Investigator Recognition Award (American Physiological Society). She is active in professional organizations, including the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Physiological Society.
Her lab explores cutting-edge areas like the gut microbiome's interaction with dietary sodium and potassium, and the long-term health implications of athletic careers. She collaborates on studies addressing former athletes' midlife health challenges and the role of nutrition in mitigating cardiovascular risks.
