Shannon Gilstrap, Ph.D., is a Professor of English at the University of North Georgia (UNG), housed in the College of Arts & Letters. He specializes in Victorian Literature, particularly the works of Matthew Arnold, and the English Prose Tradition from the Renaissance to the Victorian era. Dr. Gilstrap earned his Ph.D. in English from Georgia State University (2011), M.A. from Clemson University (2001), and B.A. from Piedmont College (1999). His research explores intersections between literature, cultural theory, and pedagogy, including grants for Asian Studies integration and adaptive technology in education. He has published widely on Victorian authors and edited the Nineteenth-Century Prose journal’s 2022 Matthew Arnold special issue. His work spans topics like cartography, Sherlock Holmes, and Gothic literature, with a focus on Arnold’s socio-cultural ideals.
Dr. Gilstrap’s academic career includes over 15 years at UNG and prior experience at Georgia Military College. He has presented at conferences such as the Midwest Conference of British Studies and the Transatlantic Studies Association, addressing themes like Arnold’s lecture tours and literary analysis. His teaching philosophy emphasizes innovation, including using technology to enhance developmental English education.
