Dr. Shannon Freeman is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). She specializes in aging, hospice palliative care, and technology adoption for rural and northern communities. Dr. Freeman holds a PhD in Health Studies and Gerontology from the University of Waterloo and an MSc in Internal Medicine and Rehabilitation from Tohoku University School of Medicine in Japan.
Her research focuses on improving care for older adults in rural settings, including dementia care, long-term care, and technology-enhanced aging. Key contributions include founding the Centre for Technology Adoption for Aging in the North (CTAAN), a national innovation hub for AgeTech. She has been awarded the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research – AGE-WELL NCE 2020 Scholar Award and the King Charles III Coronation Medal for her impactful research.
Dr. Freeman’s work emphasizes community-partnered initiatives, such as eBook clubs to combat apathy and Dementia-Inclusive Neighborhoods projects using GIS analysis. She is actively involved in policy recommendations for sustainable AgeTech implementation and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to address health equity and palliative care access.
Her teaching spans Nursing, Health Sciences, and Northern Medical Program Flex, mentoring graduate students in gerontology and rural health. She is a sought-after expert in media and policy discussions on aging and technology.
