Shannon Bassett is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the McEwen School of Architecture, Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. A Canadian-American architectural and urban designer, she operates at the intersection of architecture, urban design, and landscape ecology. She serves as Advisory Chair and Co-Founder of BEA(N) - Building Equality in Architecture North, advocating for gender equity in the profession.
Her educational background includes a Masters of Architecture in Urban Design from Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Bachelors of Architecture with Distinction from Carleton University. Fully bilingual in English and French (Ontario Secondary School French Immersion Diploma), she also speaks rudimentary Mandarin.
Research focuses span:
- China's explosive urbanization and changing landscapes
- North American shrinking cities and post-industrial landscapes
- Rural urbanism ('rurbanism') and village planning
- Historic urban conservation (e.g., Delhi's walled city)
- Green infrastructure implementation
- Participatory ecological urbanism
Award highlights include the AIA Pullara Award (2011) and National Endowment for the Arts grant for (Re)Stitch Tampa. Current research on Delhi's Shahjahanabad conservation receives SSHRC Insight Development grant support.
She has taught at University at Buffalo, University of South Florida, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. International engagements include Busan National University's BIAD CAMPUS workshop (Korea UNESCO ESD project), Tongji University collaborations, and Delhi School of Planning partnerships. Institutional service includes Laurentian University Senate membership, OAA Sustainable Built Environment Committee appointment, and Building Technology Educators' Society Board position.
Design work has been exhibited at Hong Kong Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale (2012) and BUGAIK International Exhibition. Professional practice includes Village of the Arts masterplan (Bradenton, FL) and Tampa Riverwalk studies, with prior experience at award-winning Boston/Ottawa firms and National Capital Commission roles.
