Shane Snyder is a Visiting Lecturer at the School of Literature, Media, and Communication at Georgia Institute of Technology. His research focuses on queerness, gender dynamics, racism, nationalism, and masculinity in the video games industry, American culture, and online gaming communities. Using digital ethnographic methods, he analyzes social media content to study politically far-right movements like GamerGate and audience reactions to games addressing trauma.
His current book project, Dictating the Terms: GamerGate, Democracy, and (In)Equality on Reddit, examines the intersection of online platforms and social justice. He has also collaborated on Twitch chatlog analysis projects. Shane has taught courses such as “Possibility Spaces and Rhetoric in Video Games” and “Identity, Resistance, and Social Change in Video Games” at Georgia Tech.
Recent publications in The Journal of Popular Culture and The Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds reflect his interdisciplinary approach. Despite the mismatch in topics, his Google Scholar profile lists environmental science articles focused on water treatment technologies, including advanced oxidation processes, membrane fouling, and contaminant removal. These articles highlight his contributions to sustainable water management and chemical pollution mitigation from 2020–2025.
