معرفی
Shahin Gaini, PhD, is an Associate Professor in Infection Medicine at the University of the Faroe Islands, jointly appointed by the Faculty of Science and Technology and the Faculty of Health Sciences (Depilin fyri Heilsu- og almannagransking). He is based at the National Hospital of the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn and can be reached at lsshaga@ls.fo.
Research Interests
Gaini’s work centres on infectious-disease epidemiology with an emphasis on population-based studies of SARS-CoV-2 infection and its long-term sequelae. His research portfolio spans:
- Seroprevalence and antibody persistence after natural infection
- Long-COVID phenotyping and 2-year follow-up of symptoms
- Immune-response trajectories and neutralizing-antibody kinetics
- Public-health surveillance and outbreak analytics in small-island populations
Across 19 indexed outputs (2015-2022), the dominant trend is a concentration of high-impact COVID-19 studies published in journals such as Journal of Internal Medicine, Emerging Infectious Diseases, and Open Forum Infectious Diseases. These works collectively advance understanding of immune durability, post-acute sequelae, and real-world epidemiology in isolated North-Atlantic communities.
Research Leadership & Collaboration
Gaini currently co-leads or leads three major projects:
- Symptoms after detection of COVID-19 infection in Faroese individuals (ongoing)
- COVID in the Faroe Islands – Infection Rates, Symptoms, and Antibodies (2020-2022)
- Tracing the true prevalence of COVID-19 in the Faroe Islands (2020-2022)
These initiatives involve multi-disciplinary teams of clinicians, epidemiologists, and virologists, both domestically and internationally.
