Professor Firouz Gaini is a distinguished anthropologist at the University of the Faroe Islands, where he serves as a Professor in Anthropology within the Faculty of History and Social Sciences. He also holds the position of Deputy Member of the Board of Directors of the University and serves as Research Leader of the Faculty of History and Social Sciences. His academic career spans over two decades, with significant contributions to the understanding of youth cultures, island societies, and gender dynamics, particularly in Nordic and Faroese contexts.
Gaini earned his Bachelor's degree in Social Anthropology from the University of Oslo (1992-1996), followed by a Master's degree in Anthropology from the University of Copenhagen (1996-1999). He completed his PhD in Anthropology at the University of the Faroe Islands (2001-2007), with research focusing on youth culture in the Faroe Islands. His academic journey also included affiliation with the Norwegian Centre for Child Research at NTNU in Trondheim (2012-2015).
Professor Gaini's research interests span multiple interconnected fields that reflect his deep engagement with cultural and social dynamics in island communities. His work on Childhood Studies examines everyday life, social relations, family dynamics, and educational experiences of children in small-scale societies. In Youth Studies, he explores cultural identity formation, gender expressions, media consumption, and future perspectives among young people in island contexts. Island Studies forms another major pillar of his work, investigating the unique characteristics of small island cultures, coastal communities, spatial relationships, and temporal experiences. Gender Studies focuses particularly on masculinities, fatherhood practices, sexualities, and identity constructions. Finally, his contributions to the Anthropology of Time examine plural temporalities, future imaginaries, experiences of waiting, and diverse paces of life in island settings.
Gaini's extensive publication record reveals consistent thematic development across his career. His early work focused on youth cultures in the Faroe Islands, gradually expanding to comparative studies across Nordic island communities and eventually incorporating Okinawan contexts. A strong thread throughout his work examines how young people navigate global influences while maintaining local identities. More recently, his research has increasingly centered on fatherhood and masculinity, revealing nuanced understandings of gender roles in island societies. His methodological approach consistently emphasizes ethnographic fieldwork, narrative analysis, and attention to local knowledge systems, particularly regarding coastal environments and intergenerational transmission.
