Dr. Shahab Abtahi is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Science, Utrecht University, specializing in Pharmacoepidemiology and Clinical Pharmacology. With a medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences, a PhD in Pharmacoepidemiology from Maastricht University, and a Master’s in Vitality and Aging from Leiden University, his research focuses on drug utilization, adverse drug outcomes, and signal detection methodologies using real-world healthcare data. He teaches advanced pharmacoepidemiology courses and supervises students at all academic levels.

He develops signal detection frameworks for drug safety and contributes to ISPE guidance on data quality and database selection.
Recent publications highlight his work in vaccine safety, neurovascular disease, and machine learning applications for adverse event prediction. He received the ISPE 2024 Emerging Leader Finalist and ISoP 2022 Best Poster Prize.
