Dr Shafiul Azam is a Lecturer in Economics at Aberystwyth Business School, Aberystwyth University. He holds an MSS from Rajshahi University, MSc and PhD in Economics from the University of Manchester. Previously, he served in Bangladesh's Planning Commission for eight years and worked as a consultant for IFAD, UNDP, and World Bank.
His research focuses on development economics, micro-econometrics, poverty dynamics, and policy evaluation. He has conducted multi-dimensional poverty studies in Wales, revealing significant poverty reduction trends and disparities between income-based and non-monetary measures. His work also explores climate change impacts on rural households and agricultural markets in Asia and Africa.
Teaching responsibilities include Financial Econometrics, Advanced Econometrics, and Economics Principles courses. He leads the ESRC-funded project 'A Dynamic Analysis of Poverty and Vulnerability in Wales' (2014–2016), collaborating with Dr Maria Plotnikova and Prof Andrew Henley. His findings on poverty persistence highlight vulnerabilities tied to household composition and health.
Awards include Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). Research interests span microcredit sustainability, farm household welfare modeling, and socio-economic impacts of climate change.
