Mahtab Uddin is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Dhaka, affiliated with the Global Development Institute under the Faculty of Social Sciences. He holds a Master of Social Science (MSS) in Economics (2015) and a Bachelor of Social Science (BSS) in Economics (2014), both from the University of Dhaka. His research focuses on labor markets, migration, poverty dynamics, and the socio-economic impacts of global phenomena such as automation and pandemics. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and economic growth.
Key research areas include the effects of automation on Bangladesh's manufacturing sector, pandemic-driven poverty changes, and household migration decisions. He has authored/co-authored five books, five journal articles, and three commissioned reports, with recent publications analyzing post-pandemic challenges and migrant household behavior. Uddin has received notable awards including the Dean’s Award (2014), M N Huda Gold Medal (2017), and Shah A M S Kibria Gold Medal (2016).
His research collaborations span global development topics, with a focus on Bangladesh’s economic transformation. Media contributions include analyses on structural economic challenges, pandemic impacts on education, and remittance dynamics during crises. He actively engages with policy-relevant research through platforms like SANEM Publications and international conferences.
