Shabbir Ahmed is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at South Dakota State University (SDSU), specializing in AI and Robotics. His research focuses on structural health monitoring, lithium-ion battery systems, and advanced signal processing techniques. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (2022), an M.S. from North Dakota State University (2017), and a B.S. from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (2013). He also completed postdoctoral studies at Stanford University (2022–2024).
His research interests include random vibrations, stress wave propagation, system identification, robotics applications, and battery degradation modeling. He has developed innovative methods using time-series analysis and stochastic models for structural health monitoring (SHM) and battery management systems. His work integrates machine learning and statistical approaches to improve reliability in aerospace and automotive systems.
A recent trend in his publications emphasizes multifunctional materials for electric vehicles, adaptive control systems, and real-time state estimation for eVTOL applications. Notable contributions include the use of piezoelectric sensors for battery health monitoring and non-stationary time series models for temperature-dependent structural analysis.
Dr. Ahmed has collaborated on experimental studies at Stanford University and has published in journals like Structural Health Monitoring and Sensors. His research bridges mechanical engineering with data science, aiming to enhance safety and efficiency in dynamic systems.
