Seán Williams is a Senior Lecturer in German and European Cultural History at the School of Languages, Arts and Societies, University of Sheffield. His research spans literary and cultural history from the 18th century to the present, focusing on the German-speaking world and its intersections with Britain, the Netherlands, and Northern Italy. He has held visiting fellowships in Germany, Italy, Norway, Switzerland, and the USA and previously taught at the University of Bern in Switzerland.

Williams’ research explores German literary and intellectual history, comparative cultural studies, and their modern legacies. He has published extensively on topics like E.T.A. Hoffmann, the cultural role of hairdressers, Swiss hotel literature, and consumerist ethics. His recent chapters examine tourist infrastructure in the Swiss Alps and hairdressing in High Modernism, blending literary analysis with urban studies and industrial capitalism critiques.
Williams is an active public humanities scholar, contributing to BBC Radio 3 documentaries, podcasts, and international media. His awards include a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship, AHRC funding, and the AHRC/BBC New Generation Thinker title. He leads Knowledge Exchange in the department and has served as Director of Learning and Teaching.
