Seung-Yup Lee

Seung-Yup (Joshua) Lee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Health Professions. He holds additional appointments as Associate Scientist at multiple UAB centers including the Center for Outcomes and Effectiveness Research and Education (COERE), Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS), Comprehensive Diabetes Center, and Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC). His research focuses on health disparities, operations management, and artificial intelligence in healthcare. He earned a PhD in Industrial Engineering from Wayne State University and completed postdoctoral training at Vanderbilt University in Anesthesiology and Management.

Dr. Lee's teaching activities include courses such as HCM403 - Operations Management in Health Care Organizations and HA606 - Operations Management & Process Improvement in Health Care. He actively participates in graduate student mentorship, serving on dissertation committees for multiple PhD candidates.

His work emphasizes integrating social determinants of health into predictive models for improving healthcare outcomes, with notable contributions to reducing emergency department boarding, enhancing appointment adherence, and addressing racial disparities in pediatric care. He has published extensively in journals like JAMIA Open, Health Care Management Review, and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Dr. Lee collaborates across disciplines, leveraging machine learning and statistical methods to tackle complex healthcare challenges, particularly in resource allocation and patient-centered care initiatives.
