Seth Graebner

Seth Graebner is an Associate Professor of French and Global Studies at Washington University in St. Louis, with a joint appointment between the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures and the Global Studies program. He serves as Director of Undergraduate Studies in Global Studies, Director of the Global Studies Honors Program, and Coordinator of European Studies and Global Cultural Studies concentrations. He earned his PhD in French literature from Harvard University.
His research focuses on the interplay between France and the Arabo-Muslim and African worlds, particularly through literature and urban cultural history. Key areas include French-speaking African and Caribbean literature, 19th- and 20th-century French literature, and Mediterranean urban descriptions. Courses taught include 'Writing North Africa,' 'Islam, Immigrants, and European Culture,' and 'Globalization and Culture.'
Recent scholarly works include History’s Place: Nostalgia and the City in French Algerian Literature (2007) and articles on Francophone authors like Kateb Yacine and Rachid Boudjedra. Current research explores 19th-century Mediterranean urban narratives in Modernity from the Margins.
Graebner chairs the Francophone Faculty Group and serves on the AAUP executive committee. His academic service includes directing undergraduate programs and coordinating interdisciplinary cultural studies initiatives.
