John Ireland is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of French and Francophone Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). His research focuses on existentialism, 20th-century French literature and thought, and contemporary political theater. He holds a PhD from New York University. Ireland has served as President of the North American Sartre Society and co-editor of Sartre Studies International. He is a member of France’s CNRS research group 'Equipe Sartre (ITEM-ENS)'.
His major works include Sartre, Un Art déloyal (1994) and the forthcoming Theater, War, and Memory in Crisis. He has translated plays like Noureddine Aba’s La Récréation des Clowns (2021). His research explores French and Francophone playwrights addressing colonialism and decolonization, including Armand Gatti and Kateb Yacine.
Awards include the UIC Silver Circle Teaching Award (2015), a Humanities Institute Fellowship (2007-2008), and France’s Chevalier des Palmes Académiques (2006).
