Sergio Schneider is a Full Professor of Sociology of Rural Development and Food Studies at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), Brazil. He has held a CNPq research scholarship for high scientific productivity in social sciences since 2003. His academic career includes visiting scientist roles at LADYSS (Paris-X University, 1997–1998), CPLAN (Cardiff University, 2007–2008), and the Centre for Food Policy (City University London, 2015–2016).
His research focuses on rural development, food security policies, family farming, and territorial development. He has supervised over 30 PhD and Post-Doc students and authored numerous publications. Notable recognitions include the 2017 FAPERGS Highlight Research Prize in Sociology.
Dr. Schneider has led professional organizations, serving as President of the Brazilian Society of Economics, Sociology and Rural Administration (SOBER, 2011–2013) and Vice-President of the Latin American Association of Rural Sociology (ALASRU, 2014–2018). He currently holds the Deputy President role at the International Rural Sociology Association (IRSA).
He advises national and international bodies like FAO, WHO, IFAD, and the European Union on rural development and food issues. His work bridges academic research with policy advocacy, particularly addressing global crises in agriculture and food systems.
