Luís Armando Gandin is a Professor of Sociology of Education at the School of Education and Graduate Program of Education of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), where he also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Educação & Realidade and founder/editor of Currículo sem Fronteiras.
His academic background includes:
- B.A. in Social Sciences from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1987)
- M.A. in Sociology from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (1993)
- Ph.D. in Education from University of Wisconsin-Madison (2002)
Gandin's research critically examines power structures in education systems, focusing on democratization of educational policy, transformative curriculum design, and sociological analysis of educational reforms in Latin American contexts. His work bridges theoretical frameworks with grassroots educational movements.
His major publications include co-editing The Routledge International Handbook of Critical Education and The Routledge International Handbook of the Sociology of Education, alongside his monograph The Struggle for Democracy in Education: Lessons from Social Realities, which analyzes participatory educational models.

- CNPq Researcher (Brazil's National Council for Scientific and Technological Development Productivity Fellowship)
He has held international appointments as Distinguished Visiting Professor at Oakland University (2006-2007) and Visiting Professor at University of Wisconsin-Madison (Spring 2017), demonstrating transnational scholarly impact.
