Sergio Machado dos Santos

Sérgio Machado dos Santos is an Honorary Rector of the University of Minho and Full Professor of Computer Science. He served as Rector of the University of Minho from 1985 to 1998 and held leadership roles in national and international higher education organizations, including Chair of the European Union Rectors’ Conferences (1999–2001) and Chair of the General Council of the Foundation of Portuguese Universities (2001–present). He has been deeply involved in academic governance, quality assurance, and policy development across European and global higher education systems.

• Education: PhD in Computer Science from the University of Manchester, and Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Porto.
• Affiliations: Member of the National Council for the Assessment of Higher Education (1998–2007), ENQA (2000–2006), and the Conseil Universitaire Jean Monnet (1996–2007).

Research & Leadership: His career focuses on institutional leadership in academia and technological education. He played a pivotal role in establishing the School of Health Sciences at the University of Minho (1999–2007) and chaired critical bodies like the Scientific-Pedagogical Council for Continuing Education (1994–2008). His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and international accreditation standards.

• Awards: Grand Cross of the Order of the Infante (2002), Grand Cross of the Order of Public Instruction (1995), and Doctor Honoris Causa from UNIVALI, Brazil.
