Sergio DeSouza-Machado

Sergio DeSouza-Machado is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at UMBC. His work focuses on atmospheric and climate physics, including radiative transfer modeling, infrared spectroscopy, and trace gas retrievals. He developed tools like kCARTA for rapid absorption spectrum computations and line-by-line codes with advanced corrections.

Education: B.A. in Math/Physics from College of Wooster (1988), M.S. (1990) and Ph.D. in Plasma Physics from University of Maryland, College Park (1996).

Research emphasizes dust height/optical depth retrievals using satellite data (AIRS, MODIS) and climate event analysis via probability distribution functions. His publications span atmospheric measurement techniques and climate modeling.
