Lorraine Remer

Lorraine Remer is a Research Professor (Physics Affiliate) at the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET), University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She specializes in aerosol remote sensing and their role in climate processes, aerosol-cloud interactions, and particulate air pollution. Her career includes 21 years at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, where she contributed to MODIS aerosol algorithms and served on several NASA science teams. She transitioned to JCET in 2012. Remer holds a Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from UC Davis (1991), an M.S. in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography (UC San Diego), and a B.S. in Atmospheric Science from UC Davis.

Her research focuses on advancing aerosol retrieval techniques using satellite data, including contributions to the PACE mission and development of algorithms like Dark Target and Unified Aerosol. She has led over 12 major field experiments and published over 120 peer-reviewed articles. Her work bridges climate science, remote sensing technology, and environmental monitoring, with applications to air quality, ocean ecosystems, and global aerosol dynamics.

Remer’s recent publications emphasize innovations in aerosol remote sensing, such as the PACE mission’s OCI instrument and HARP2 polarimeter, as well as studies on wildfire smoke, dust transport, and aerosol radiative forcing. She collaborates on international initiatives like the WMO HTAP and contributes to long-term aerosol data records. Her expertise spans algorithm development, satellite sensor calibration, and multi-angle polarimetry for aerosol characterization.
