Sergio Chaves is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Active Learning Initiative at Cornell University's Department of Mathematics (College of Arts and Sciences). He holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Western Ontario (2020). His research focuses on Mathematics Education and Algebraic Topology, including topics like equivariant cohomology, polyhedral products, and neural networks. He advocates for inclusive math education through active learning and technology integration.
Teaching roles include Lecturer at Cornell, Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Rochester (2021-2024), and Teaching Fellow at Western Ontario. He has taught courses like Multivariable Calculus for Engineers and Linear Algebra, emphasizing flipped classrooms and technology tools (WebWork, Geogebra). Awards include a 2024 Student Course Development Award for Linear Algebra/Differential Equations material.
Research projects include collaborations on group actions in topology and AI in education. He also organizes topology seminars and has experience with data science (MITx certificate). His work bridges pure mathematics with pedagogical innovation, supported by grants and fellowships at institutions like the Fields Institute.
