Sergio Carreño serves as an Instructor in Percussion at Reed College's Music Department while maintaining an active professional career as a percussionist with the Oregon Symphony since 2012. His position at Reed College constitutes his primary academic affiliation within higher education.
Carreño earned both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Carnegie Mellon University under percussionist Timothy Adams Jr. His educational background established the foundation for his diverse performance career spanning multiple musical genres and professional contexts.
His performance expertise encompasses symphony orchestras (The Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, San Francisco Symphony), theater productions, dance collaborations, and cross-genre work in Latin, rock, and jazz ensembles. As an avid chamber musician, he co-founded the Gemini Project percussion group within Portland's 45th Parallel Universe and has performed with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Chamber Music Northwest.
Carreño was a New World Symphony fellow under Michael Tilson Thomas, performing at Carnegie Hall, PBS Great Performances, and international venues. His professional trajectory demonstrates significant versatility across classical, contemporary, and popular music domains while maintaining his current dual roles at Reed College and the Oregon Symphony.
