Sergio Caramelo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Policy at Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon. He serves as an Integrated Researcher at CIES-Iscte - Center for Research and Studies in Sociology, focusing on Inequalities, Work and Social Welfare. His academic leadership includes roles as Director of Public Policy Assessment (2013–2019) and membership in the Scientific Council (2020–2023).

He actively mentors graduate researchers, currently advising 7 doctoral candidates (e.g., GIS in public policy, cultural heritage evaluation) and 19 master's students (e.g., housing policy, social welfare models).
He coordinates the research group on Inequalities, Work and Social Welfare at CIES-Iscte and has organized national/international events like the Resident Attraction Strategies workshop (2013) and National Meeting on Local Social Development Contracts (2010).
