Sergey Smirnov is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Life Sciences at the University of Bath. His research focuses on membrane and cellular mechanisms regulating arterial function in health and disease, employing advanced techniques like electrophysiology, molecular biology, and microscopy. Collaborations include work with physicists on cell surface protein complexes and renal vascular biologists studying potassium channel roles in blood pressure control.
Key research areas include ion channel regulation in vascular smooth muscle cells, mitochondrial-membrane interactions, and the role of potassium channels in conditions like pulmonary hypertension. He has led or co-led projects funded by the UK charity sector, Royal Society, and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), investigating topics ranging from calcitriol's vascular effects to nanotechnology applications in cell imaging.
His work contributes to UN SDGs related to good health and well-being. Notable achievements include discovering mitochondrial-mediated Mg²⁺-dependent Kv channel regulation and developing atomic force microscopy approaches for endothelin receptor visualization. Current research integrates cellular signaling pathways with vascular tone regulation mechanisms.
