Dr. Sergey Marchenko serves as a Research Associate Professor at the Geophysical Institute, University of Alaska Fairbanks, within the College of Natural Science and Mathematics since 2008, and concurrently as a Visiting Professor at the Chinese Academy of Science's State Key Laboratory of Frozen Soil Engineering since 2011.
His academic credentials include a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and Theoretical Mechanics (1985), M.S. in Geology with Mathematical Methods specialization (1991), and Ph.D. in Glaciology and Geocryology (2000) from Moscow State University.
His research investigates climate-permafrost interactions globally, with emphasis on altitudinal permafrost formation and evolution in mountain regions during the Quaternary period. He pioneers numerical modeling of permafrost dynamics using high-performance computing platforms and geospatial analysis techniques to address critical questions in frozen ground response to climate change.
Dr. Marchenko actively contributes to the scientific community through editorial service for Sciences in Cold and Arid Regions and leadership roles in the International Permafrost Association, including co-chairing the Working Group on Mapping and Modeling of Mountain Permafrost (2003-2008) and participation in IPA Action Groups focused on permafrost maximums. His professional affiliations encompass the American Geophysical Union, United States Permafrost Association, International Permafrost Association, and European Geophysical Union.
