Sergey Gavrilets is a Distinguished Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, jointly appointed in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Department of Mathematics, within the College of Arts and Sciences. He is the Director of the Center for the Dynamics of Social Complexity (DySoC) and Associate Director for Scientific Activities at the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS). Additionally, he serves as an External Faculty member at the Complexity Science Hub (CSH) in Vienna and as a research associate at the School of Anthropology, University of Oxford.
His research focuses on theoretical and mathematical approaches to understanding complex evolutionary processes. Key areas include evolutionary biology, social and cultural evolution, fitness landscapes, speciation, sexual conflict, and the origins of human social complexity. He integrates tools from biology, mathematics, anthropology, psychology, and computational science to model long-term societal and biological transformations.
The recent publication in Science Advances (2022) exemplifies his work at the intersection of historical data and mathematical modeling, testing macro-level hypotheses about the drivers of social complexity. His publications consistently emphasize interdisciplinary synthesis, computational modeling, and large-scale evolutionary patterns across biological and cultural domains.
His scientific honors include:
- President’s Award from the American Society of Naturalists (1999)
- Guggenheim Fellowship (2008)
- Election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2017)
He has led numerous transdisciplinary initiatives, including working groups, workshops, and tutorials, fostering collaboration across fields. His leadership at NIMBioS and DySoC underscores his role in advancing integrative research in mathematical biology and social complexity. He has also co-edited influential volumes and authored a seminal monograph on fitness landscapes and speciation.
