Professor Sergei Shubin is a leading academic in migration studies and human geography at Swansea University, serving as Director of the Centre for Migration Policy Research. He holds a Professorial position within the School of Biosciences, Geography and Physics under the Faculty of Science and Engineering. His research focuses on migration mobilities, social inequality, temporal dynamics, and post-socialist geographies, supported by over £8 million in grants from EU Horizon2020, ESRC, and international collaborations.
Shubin’s work spans interdisciplinary projects addressing poverty alleviation in South Asia, aquaculture-led development, and migrant integration. He has supervised 12 PhD students and pioneered joint PhD programs with Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. His teaching includes modules on migration theory, qualitative research methods, and rural development.
Key collaborations include partnerships with institutions in France, New Zealand, India, and Brazil, alongside grants from British Council and Newton Fund. He has led projects on EU migration perceptions, cross-European settlement, and environmental marginalization. His creative outputs include films, exhibitions, and a multilingual children’s storybook to engage marginalized communities.
Shubin’s research emphasizes participatory action research, co-designing initiatives like language cafes and art-based community projects. He has held academic roles globally, including at the University of Aberdeen and University of Saskatchewan, and is affiliated with institutions in Russia, Canada, and Brazil.
