Sergei Mirkin is the White Family Chair in Biology and Professor at Tufts University's Department of Biology. He holds a PhD in Molecular Biology from the Russian Academy of Sciences and an MS in Genetics from Moscow State University. His research focuses on DNA structure and genome instability, particularly mechanisms of repetitive DNA expansion in hereditary disorders like Fragile X syndrome and Huntington's disease.
Research explores replication fork dynamics at repetitive DNA sequences and collisions between replication/transcription machineries. Current projects investigate structural features causing DNA repeat instability using yeast and mammalian models, with implications for neurological disease mechanisms.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on DNA replication challenges, structural biology of alternative DNA conformations, and molecular basis of repeat expansion disorders. Recent work emphasizes therapeutic interventions targeting DNA secondary structures.
Leads the Mirkin Lab with multiple graduate students and technicians. Research supported by grants investigating replication-transcription interplay and chromosomal fragility mechanisms.
