Serge Mostowy

Professor Serge Mostowy is a Professor of Cellular Microbiology at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), affiliated with the Department of Infection Biology within the Faculty of Infectious and Tropical Diseases. His research focuses on understanding bacterial pathogenesis, particularly Shigella infections, host-pathogen interactions, and the role of the cytoskeleton in immune responses. He utilizes advanced microscopy and zebrafish models to study bacterial virulence mechanisms and host defenses.

His research interests span cellular microbiology, bacterial pathogenesis, and immunology, with a strong emphasis on Shigella and the septin cytoskeleton's role in pathogen containment. He has pioneered the use of organoid models and high-throughput microscopy to study bacterial infections, contributing to dysentery control strategies. Key areas include septin-mediated antibacterial pathways, ERK signaling in cell competition, and host immune responses to pathogens.

Prof. Mostowy has secured significant funding, including grants from the European Research Council, Wellcome Trust, and BBSRC. He supervises PhD students such as Sydney Leigh Miles and has mentored postdocs like Hoan Van Ngo and Ana Teresa Lopez Jimenez. His work has been recognized with awards like the Louis Pasteur Bicentenary Prize and the Royal Microscopy Society Scientific Achievement Award.

He is an Associate Editor for Cytoskeleton and European Journal of Cell Biology, and has organized major scientific meetings such as the UK Cellular Microbiology Network.
