Semra Akay is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Sociology, Gaziantep University. With a PhD in Geography from Durham University (2017), an MA from Bristol University (2012), and a BA in Geography Education from Dicle University (2009), her academic career spans institutions in Turkey and the UK.

Her research focuses on political geography, urban studies, and historical geography, with a strong emphasis on gender, critical theory, and postcolonial perspectives. She explores the intersections of neoliberalism, nationalism, and infrastructure in Istanbul, as well as temporal-spatial dynamics in protests and ecotourism in Southeast Asia.
Recent publications in journals like British Journal of Industrial Relations and Southeast European and Black Sea Studies highlight her work on labor conflicts, urban transformation, and radical geographies of dissent. Her articles span themes such as feminist historical geography, religion-environment relationships, and geopolitical implications of mega-projects.
