Xiaobo Su is a Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Oregon. His research focuses on China's post-1978 economic transformation, urban and border development, and transnational regionalization in Southeast Asia. He examines how political economy shapes material and cultural landscapes through heritage tourism, cross-border networks, and state sovereignty practices.
Research Interests: Urban development and heritage commodification, China-Myanmar-Laos-Vietnam border politics, geopolitical strategy in narcotics control, and Yunnan's regional development. His work deploys political economy frameworks to analyze state-led development, transnational networks, and social relations.
Teaching: Recent courses include Professional Development (Geog 612) and Global Drug Trade Geography (Geog 199). He welcomes graduate students researching cross-border trade, migration, urban tourism, or China's overseas development.
Editorial Roles: Co-editor of Territory, Politics, Governance and Associate Editor of Tourism Geographies. Active in fieldwork across Chinese border regions and Southeast Asia.
