Dr Selvino de Kort is a Senior Lecturer in Animal Behaviour at Manchester Metropolitan University, based in the Department of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on behavioral ecology, bioacoustics, and wildlife conservation, examining human impacts on animal populations in regions like the UK, Tanzania, and the Philippines. He has held postdoctoral roles at the University of Cambridge and Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology.
His teaching spans undergraduate courses such as Comparative Anatomy and Physiology and Sex & Survival, as well as postgraduate modules like Avian Biology and Conservation. Current supervisees include MSc students studying airport-bird interactions, leopard call recognition, and blue tit reproductive success, alongside PhD candidates addressing felid vocalizations and cassowary conservation breeding.
Dr de Kort’s research explores ex-situ conservation strategies, vocal communication disruption by noise pollution, and urban wildlife dynamics. He collaborates with Manchester Airport, Chester Zoo, and the British Trust for Ornithology. Notable past projects include studying aircraft noise effects on bird communities and social network analysis for white rhinoceros management.
He serves as an external examiner for PhD defenses at Cambridge, Queen Mary, and Bangor Universities, and edits Animal Behaviour journal. His work bridges field studies and applied conservation, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to ecological challenges.
