معرفی
Professor Robert Young serves as Chair in Wildlife Conservation at the University of Salford Manchester within the School of Science, Engineering & Environment. With a career spanning over three decades, he has established himself as a leading researcher in animal behavior and conservation science, dividing his time between field conservation projects in Brazil and zoo-based research in the UK.
- BSc (Hons) in Biology, University of Nottingham (1986-1989)
- PhD in Animal Behaviour/Animal Welfare, University of Edinburgh (1989-1993)
- Researcher, Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (1993-2001)
- Professor of Animal Behaviour and Conservation, PUC Minas, Brazil (2001-2013)
Professor Young's research focuses on wildlife conservation, animal welfare, and animal behavior with particular expertise in zoo biology. His interdisciplinary approach integrates traditional field methods with cutting-edge technologies including biotelemetry, molecular biology, machine learning, and bioacoustics. His work spans approximately 50 different animal species from giant anteaters to humans, addressing critical conservation challenges through innovative methodologies.
His recent publications reveal strong trends in acoustic ecology and noise pollution impacts on wildlife, environmental enrichment for captive animals, and human-animal interactions. The research demonstrates increasing interdisciplinary collaboration, with projects spanning from Brazilian savannas to urban European environments. His work on passive acoustic monitoring represents a significant methodological advance in biodiversity assessment.
Professor Young actively supervises PhD students in areas including wildlife conservation, noise impact on wildlife, and animal welfare. His research is supported by substantial projects such as PLAN-B (Preventing Light And Noise impacting Biodiversity) and REFMAP, demonstrating continued funding success and research relevance.
- Author of approximately 150 scientific papers and one textbook on zoo animal welfare
- Principal Investigator on four major research projects (2018-2027)
- Contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals for ocean conservation and terrestrial ecosystem protection
His teaching portfolio includes undergraduate modules on Zoo Biology, Conservation in Zoos, and Zoos and Exhibit Design, plus specialized instruction for Wildlife Documentary Production MA students. Professor Young emphasizes sharing his passion for animal conservation with students, considering this his greatest academic pleasure.
