Selina Stewart is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Classics, & Religion at the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Arts. She holds a PhD from Cornell University and a BA (summa cum laude) from Concordia University. Her research bridges ancient Greek poetry and science, focusing on intersections between literary and scientific thought. Key projects include a book on ancient Greek optical theory and contributions to Hellenistic poetics and astronomy studies.

Research Interests: Dr. Stewart explores ancient Greek poetry’s engagement with science, particularly optical theory, astronomy, and acrostic poetry. Her work spans Hellenistic epic, lyric, and elegiac traditions, alongside comparative linguistic studies in Indo-European and Semitic languages. She has published on divination, astrology, and the poetics of color terminology.

- Cécile E. Mactaggart Travel Award for Narrative Writing (2014)
- Faculty of Arts Award for Excellence in Graduate Mentorship and Teaching (2020)
Teaching & Mentorship: Teaches Greek/Latin language courses (GREEK 201, LATIN 101) and advanced seminars on Hellenistic poetry and classical literature. Active in graduate mentorship, having advised students in Classics and Historical Linguistics. Also contributed to courses in translation studies and the history of science.
Professional Contributions: Former board member of the Classical Association of Canada, journal Phoenix, and Science, Technology & Society program at UAlberta. Translated Nicole Loraux’s Born of the Earth (Cornell UP, 2000) and other scholarly works, including contributions to Greek Thought (2000).
