Emily Katz Anhalt is a Professor of Classics at Sarah Lawrence College, where she has taught since 2004. She holds an AB in Ancient Greek from Dartmouth College (summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa) and a PhD in Classical Philology from Yale University. Her primary research interests include Greek epic and lyric poetry, Greek historiography, Greek tragedy, and Greek and Roman sexuality. She has authored three books: Enraged: Why Violent Times Need Ancient Greek Myths (Yale, 2017), Embattled: How Ancient Greek Myths Empower Us to Resist Tyranny (Stanford, 2021), and Solon the Singer: Politics and Poetics (Rowman & Littlefield, 1993).
Her scholarship bridges classical literature with modern political and social challenges, emphasizing empathy, rational thought, and democratic ideals. She has published extensively in journals like New England Classical Journal, Classical World, and The Classical Journal, focusing on narrative techniques in Herodotus, metaphor in Homer, and themes of identity and justice in Greek tragedy.
