Emily Baragwanath is a Professor of Classics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). She holds a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford and has held prestigious fellowships at institutions like the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the National Humanities Center. Currently, she serves as Director of the Associate Professor Program at the Institute for the Arts and Humanities (2024–2027).
Her scholarly focus centers on literary techniques in ancient historiography, particularly examining Greek historians like Herodotus, Thucydides, and Xenophon. Notable works include Motivation and Narrative in Herodotus (Oxford, 2008) and co-edited volumes such as Myth, Truth, and Narrative in Herodotus (OUP, 2012). Her current project, Xenophon’s Women, explores gender representation in fourth-century Athenian literature.
Teaching responsibilities include graduate and undergraduate courses on classical historiography, Greek tragedy, and interdisciplinary topics like 'Writing the Past.' She has received major awards including the Hettleman Prize (2013) and the Schwab Academic Excellence Award (2019).
Her research bridges historiography with gender studies, mythology, and ancient ethnography. She actively contributes to academic discourse through editorial roles at Histos and the Trends in Classics series.
