Selene States

Selene States is a Teaching Professor of Fine Art and Textiles at Loughborough University, with a practice-based PhD candidate at Bauhaus University Weimar. Her research explores the radical history of women’s fashion through performance, textile reproduction, and interdisciplinary art practices. She holds a diploma in Fine Arts from the State Academy of Fine Arts, Karlsruhe, and has exhibited globally.

Research Interests: Selene’s work interrogates themes of cultural reproduction, gendered labor in art history, and the materiality of fashion. Her practice bridges performance, video, and textile installations to critique historical narratives. Key projects include the Syncopation dance film (2012) and the DELINATE Bauhaus exhibition (2021), exploring how design patterns embody cultural memory.

Awards: Over 30 grants and recognitions including the DAAD Teaching Stipend, Bauhaus Travel Grant, and Camillo-Michele Gloria Prize. Her work has been featured at museums like Kunsthalle Baden-Baden and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin.

Grants & Projects: Funded projects include Syncopation’s glass dance floor via Kickstarter and the Bauhaus Research School-supported Commercial Pattern Archive study. Collaborations include with Wilde Studios (textiles) and choreographer Ryan François.

Labs/Teams: Leads the DELINATE project consortium with textile experts and historians, focusing on Bauhaus reproduction practices. Active in interdisciplinary collaborations bridging art, fashion, and performance disciplines.
