Selena Dickey is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Furman University. Her research focuses on media industry studies, communication policy, and infrastructure studies, particularly examining historical and geographic dimensions of media systems. She joined Furman in Fall 2021 and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, alongside master’s degrees from the University of Colorado Denver and San Francisco State University, and a B.A. from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
Her work explores sociotechnical systems like early television distribution infrastructures (antennas, cables, satellites) and how stakeholders interpreted these systems in localized contexts. Notable publications include analyses of legal narratives in media (Journal of Cinema and Media Studies), broadband policy frameworks (Telecommunication Policy), and Hawaii’s role in domestic satellite broadcasting history (Flow Journal).

Dr. Dickey has received several awards, including the Jesse H. Jones Fellowship (2020) and Roderick P. Her teaching includes media policy and writing courses, with prior experience as a senior writing center consultant and composition instructor at UC Denver.
