Sebastien Meffre is a Professor and Head of Earth Sciences at the University of Tasmania, Australia. He leads the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES) and focuses on geochronology, plate tectonics, and ore deposit studies. His research combines fieldwork with advanced analytical techniques to understand geological processes and mineral formation.
Education: PhD (1996) and BSc (1991) in Earth Sciences from the University of Sydney.
Research Interests:
- U-Pb dating of rocks and minerals
- Plate tectonic reconstructions of the Pacific region
- Ore genesis and metallogeny
- Environmental geochemistry of mine wastes
- Pb isotopic evolution studies
Collaborations: Works with mining companies (e.g., BHP, Teck Resources), geological surveys, and international institutions. Leads projects funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and industry partners.
Labs/Teams: Principal investigator in the CODES Analytical Research Program, specializing in mineral chemistry and geochronology.
Grants/Projects:
- 2025: Critical minerals study in the Delamerian Orogen
- 2022: Geoenvironmental analysis of legacy mine sites
- 2021–2022: Paleomagnetic studies of the Lachlan Orogen
