Daniel J. Kontak is a Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University, where he teaches courses including GEOL 2237 (Sedimentary, Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks), GEOL 3607 (Ore Deposits & Their Geological Environments), and GEOL 4607 (Ore-Forming Processes). His research program focuses on characterizing magmatic and hydrothermal ore systems using traditional and novel approaches, incorporating field studies supported by geochronologic, petrologic, and mineral-fluid chemical work.
Dr. Kontak's research expertise spans Economic Geology, Fluid Inclusions, Gold Deposits, and Rare-Metal Pegmatites. His work incorporates field studies supported by a wide range of analytical techniques including Re-Os, Ar-Ar, TIMS, and LA U-Pb geochronology. He has developed particular interest in using mineral and fluid chemistry to trace ore system evolution at different scales, with recent focus on smaller-scale problem solving in ore deposit research. His research is financed through various granting agencies including NSERC DG and CRD grants, Geological Survey of Canada, provincial surveys, and mining companies.
Analysis of Dr. Kontak's recent publication record reveals a consistent focus on gold deposit systems, particularly orogenic gold deposits and intrusion-related gold systems. His work frequently employs advanced analytical techniques like LA-ICP-MS for sulfide analysis, fluid inclusion studies, and stable isotope geochemistry to understand ore formation processes. There's a clear trend toward investigating multi-stage mineralization processes, fluid evolution in ore systems, and developing exploration vectors based on detailed geochemical signatures.

Dr. Kontak actively supervises numerous graduate students at both M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels, with current projects focusing on gold and tin hydrothermal systems, fluid history of metallotects, and gold metallogeny in greenstone belts. His research is supported by multiple granting agencies including NSERC, Geological Survey of Canada, and various mining companies. He has established collaborations with researchers at St. Mary's University, University of Alberta, and other institutions across Canada and internationally. His work often involves access to state-of-the-art analytical facilities at Laurentian University and collaborating institutions.
