Sebastian Stichel

Sebastian Stichel is a Professor in Rail Vehicle Dynamics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology since 2010 and currently serves as Vice Dean of the School of Engineering Sciences (since 2024). His roles include Board member of the Swedish Association of Railway Industries (SWEDTRAIN) and International Association for Vehicle System Dynamics (IAVSD). He leads the KTH Railway Group and has held various academic and administrative positions, including Deputy Head of the Department of Engineering Mechanics and Head of the Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Beijing Jiaotong University and Bandung Institute of Technology, and has been a Visiting Professor at multiple institutions globally.

He holds Master and PhD degrees in Vehicle Technology from Technische Universität Berlin, supervised by Prof. Klaus Knothe. His research focuses on rail vehicle dynamics, wheel-rail interaction, and predictive maintenance, with notable contributions to understanding wear, rolling contact fatigue, and freight vehicle dynamics. He has led projects on active suspension systems and pantograph-catenary interaction, contributing to advancements in high-speed and heavy-haul rail transportation.

His work integrates computational simulations with experimental validation, addressing challenges in railway infrastructure durability and operational safety. Over 10 years of industry experience at Bombardier Transportation further strengthens his academic contributions. Key contributions include developing models for wheel and rail life prediction and optimizing rail vehicle designs for reduced track damage, as seen in his extensive publication record and editorial roles in journals like Vehicle System Dynamics.
