Dr. Sebastian Mühl is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture at the Art Academy of Latvia. He holds a PhD in Art Theory and has held visiting professorships at Klagenfurt University and the University of Art and Design Offenbach. His research focuses on utopian thought in contemporary art, global art histories, critical theory, and the intersection of art with politics and science.
He completed his PhD thesis on utopian revival in contemporary art, later expanded into his monograph Utopien der Gegenwartskunst (2020). Mühl has curated exhibitions such as the voices platform at the Dresden State Art Collections, exploring sustainability and transcultural themes. He has taught at multiple institutions including the Alpen-Adria-University Klagenfurt, where he led courses on visual culture, exhibition history, and critical theory.
Mühl’s publications span art criticism, film theory, and design studies. His work interrogates utopian aesthetics, postmodern legacies, and the role of art in shaping political discourse. Collaborative projects include the Satellites film series examining architectural utopias and urban sociology.
His academic contributions include organizing workshops on visual research for doctoral students and co-developing curricula in visual culture studies. Mühl is also involved in the EU4ART consortium, advancing transnational art education frameworks.
