Research interests span biodiversity, freshwater ecosystems, and sustainability science. His work examines how human-driven biodiversity loss impacts ecosystem functions and services, particularly in Amazonian fisheries and their role in human nutrition. He combines theoretical, experimental, and observational approaches to address climate change effects on mercury levels in fish, hydropower tradeoffs, and sustainable aquaculture.
Recent publications highlight trends in freshwater biodiversity, climate change mitigation, nutritional security, and sustainable development. Subfields include Amazon river health, mercury bioaccumulation, Pareto optimization, degraded land aquaculture, socioecological systems, and carbon offset markets.
