Alexander S Flecker is a Professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences. His research spans tropical and temperate freshwater ecosystems with extensive fieldwork across South America, Mesoamerica, and the Caribbean. He serves in multiple graduate fields including Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, International Development, Natural Resources, and Conservation and Sustainable Development.

Flecker's research focuses on the interface between community and ecosystem ecology, examining how biodiversity influences ecosystem functioning. Key research themes include: the role of animals as ecosystem engineers, migratory fish as nutrient vectors, eco-evolutionary interactions (particularly with Trinidadian guppies), trait-based vulnerability to climate change, and consequences of biodiversity loss from overharvest and invasions.
