Michael E Van Amburgh is a Professor of Dairy Nutrition and a Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. His work integrates research, teaching, and outreach in animal science, with a focus on dairy cattle nutrition and sustainable agricultural practices.
- Education: PhD in Animal Science (Cornell University, 1996); BS in Animal Science (The Ohio State University, 1984).
Research Interests center on advancing the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System (CNCPS), a globally adopted model for dairy cattle nutrition. His studies examine:
- Whole-animal and ruminal nitrogen metabolism.
- Amino acid supply and requirements for high-producing lactating cattle.
- Feed chemistry interactions with ruminal function and post-ruminal digestion.
- Environmental impact mitigation through improved nutrient use efficiency.
Publications highlight trends in:
- Computational modeling for nutrient optimization.
- Greenhouse gas emissions reduction in dairy systems.
- Feed additive effects on nitrogen recycling.
- Long-term impacts of calf nutrition on lactation productivity.
- International comparisons of milk fat and protein production constraints.
Awards & Honors:
- American Dairy Science Foundation Scholar Award
- Stephen H. Weiss Presidential Fellow (Cornell’s highest teaching award)
- Donald C. Burgett Distinguished Advisor Award
- Land O’Lakes Teaching and Mentoring Award
- American Feed Ingredient Association Award for Research
Teaching & Outreach:
- Advises hundreds of undergraduate students and the Cornell University Dairy Science Club.
- Develops international experiential learning courses, including a dairy study trip to Italy.
- Collaborates with PRO-DAIRY and extension programs in New York and globally.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System development team and is a key member of the Cornell Dairy Fellows Program.
