Sebastian Decker is a Senior Physician and Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit & Recovery Room at Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD), affiliated with the Department of Anesthesiology at Heidelberg University's Medical Faculty. Holding the academic title of Privatdozent (PD Dr. med.), he also serves as a Research Associate in the Reactive Metabolites and Autonomous Immunomodulation Group and the Nosocomial Infections and Fungal Immunity Group. His work bridges clinical practice and research, focusing on molecular diagnostics in sepsis, bacterial infections, and anesthesiology. Key interests include next-generation sequencing (NGS) for pathogen detection, biomarker development for critical care, and optimizing analgesia protocols in surgical patients. He has contributed to advancements in cell-free DNA analysis and immunomodulation studies. His research emphasizes translating genomic insights into clinical diagnostics, particularly for sepsis and bacteremia.
Research Focus: Dr. Decker’s projects address urgent clinical challenges such as rapid pathogen identification via NGS, understanding host-pathogen interactions in sepsis, and improving outcomes in intensive care and post-transplantation settings. His studies often integrate biochemical markers (e.g., cholinesterase activity) with genomic approaches, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach to translational medicine.
Labs/Teams: He collaborates actively within interdisciplinary groups at UKHD, including teams focusing on nosocomial infections and immunomodulatory mechanisms. His work aligns with Heidelberg’s broader initiatives in personalized medicine and precision diagnostics.
