Prof. Markus Weigand serves as the Medical Director of the Department of Anesthesiology at Heidelberg University Hospital (UKHD) and is Deputy Chief Medical Director of the hospital. He holds a W3 Professorship in Anesthesiology at Heidelberg University. His career spans leadership roles in anesthesiology and intensive care, including prior directorships at University Hospitals in Gießen and Marburg. He is a board member of the German Sepsis Society and has held its presidency (2009–2017). His research focuses on immunological aspects of sepsis, including hyperinflammation and immunoparalysis, with habilitation work at Heidelberg University (2001).
Education: MD from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (1992), European Diploma in Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (2002), and a habilitation in Anesthesiology (2004). He completed research fellowships at the Basel Institute for Immunology and DKFZ Heidelberg.
