Sean Whittle

Dr Sean Whittle is a Senior Lecturer in Catholic Education at St Mary's University, working part-time as a Religious Education teacher in a Catholic school. He is affiliated with the Centre for the Enhancement of Religious and Spiritual Learning (CERRL) and chairs the academic association AULRE. His academic work bridges theology, philosophy, and education, emphasizing Catholic educational theory and practice.

Education: BA (Philosophy & Theology) from Heythrop College, MTh (Systematic Theology) from Heythrop, MA in Education (IOE-UCL), PGCE in Religious Education, and a PhD in the Philosophy of Catholic Education (IOE-UCL).

Research focuses on Catholic education philosophy, religious literacy, and the intersection of theology with pedagogy. He has edited over six books and led projects like the Brunel University Religious Literacy initiative and research for a Birmingham Catholic Multi-Academy Trust. He organizes the Network for Researchers in Catholic Education (NfRCE).

Recent publications include collaborative works on global Catholic education perspectives and responses to Prof. Gerald Grace's scholarship. His 2014 monograph A Theory of Catholic Education remains foundational in the field.
